Full of heart, with an adventurous spirit that can find trouble easily, she works hard to make amends for the stones she cast at Sammie Jetsam. Dencey has a deep respect for her strict mother and a heart-filling love for her often absent ship’s-captain father. Dencey’s and Sam’s various adventures introduce us to other Quaker personalities, the Nantucket Quaker culture, and fun community events that were a mainstay at that time. Considered one of Nathaniel Lee’s best tragedies, The Rival Queens, or, The Death of Alexander the Great dramatizes a story of the rivalry between Alexander the Great’s two wives: Roxana, his first, and Statira, who displaced her. The play was first performed at London’s Theatre Royal by the King’s Company. It was influenced by Gauthier de Costes, seigneur de la Calprenède’s, Cassandre. – Summary by Brian Fullen

Stalino and Euthynicis have both fallen in love with Casina, who as an infant was raised by Cleostrata, Stalino’s mistress. It is arranged that Stalino and Euthynicis (Cleostrata’s son) shall draw lots to see who will determine her future. But Cleostrata develops a stratagem to try to prevent this. (Note: some small fragments of the original script in Act 5 did not survive 2200 years. Neither the translator nor we have made anything up to fill those short gaps – in fact, the translator left some of the nearby text still in Latin – but you can get the idea of who is in big big trouble.)

Political history figured large in volume 110 of the Short Nonfiction Collection, with reader chosen topics ranging from the Scottish Declaration of Arboarth (1320), to the battle of Cape St. Vincent (1797), early exploration of the North Pacific ocean, Thomas Jefferson’s last testament, and Abraham Lincoln’s character and legacy.
